Our community recently lost a beloved member, Mark Sandler, to a heart attack. Mark did not receive treatment until 50 minutes after his cardiac event in his home in El Cajon de Grecia.
An Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) might have helped Mark, but these life-saving machines are not standard equipment in rural ambulances here in Grecia.
With this in mind, our community has started a GoFundMe project with the goal of raising funds to help purchase five AEDs (Automatic External Defibrillators) as well as portable oxygen tanks, and emergency stretchers to help out the local mountain communities above the town of Grecia.
Mark’s widow Laurie Bass feels that giving others a chance to live out their dreams in Costa Rica is the best way to honor Mark, whose creative life was cut short. Please click on the link below for a more detailed explanation of what goals they hope to achieve.
Thank you so much for remembering him.
Our current homepage illustration is a wonderful oil painting of Grecia by local artist Donald Voelker. You can see this work and others on display at
Cafe Arte Latte, across from ICE, in Grecia;
they are also available for purchase.
